"If someone can point me to a SharePoint blog anywhere that doesn’t have a post about the Famous 40 Templates I’ll buy them a beer!"

I'm running into a similar constraint with Records Management for a new client. Although there is RM available, the needs of the business require additional functionality (i.e. custom). Not sure what MS can do about RM and ensuring all bases are covered. At least we have the ability to create custom workflow if needed - which is what we will be doing.

Some other points, what I find interesting with SharePoint is how my clients hit all areas of SharePoint. I have worked with Collaboration, Content Management, and Business Forms. Have yet to touch BDC, MSBI, and customizing Enterprise Search.

All in all a good article on the different areas of SharePoint and worth reading through - especially for those folks who are new to SharePoint.

Wow!! Really good article. What I find most useful are the "what to avoid" bits. For example BDC - so much time and resources is often spent trying to implement BDC following the management having been sold Sharepoint as the Holy Grail that will integrate all company systems by some salesman/consultant who's never really worked with the product. I really like the article being broken down into different sections corresponding to the phases of Intranet development. Very useful, especially for those planning their implementation or those who have already implemented the basics and are wondering what their next steps should be.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up - really looking forward to next installments.

I guess not that many people know about SharepointMagazine.net yet which may explain the lack of comments. Judging by the quality of content posted here I'm sure it's going to change change soon :)

    Jeremy,
Assume job here. One comment at a glance and had I not read "... 1 star is easy and 5 stars is most complex..." I would have thought just the opposite. Maybe use a "bulldozer" or a "Person with a shovel" to indicate the work involve next time.

    Thanks, Greg C
